GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: Natalie was a member of Southeast Missouri State Women's Basketball team (04-06) NCAA Tournament 2006. Natalie has been apart of the NZ Tall Ferns since 2007 and competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

COACH'S COMMENTS:

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Natalie has three sisters, Charmain, Hailey and Kalani, which all have basketball backgrounds. Charmian was a member of NZ Tall Ferns team and competed at the 2008 Olympic Games. Hailey went to played college basketball with University Tennessee at Martin in the United States. While younger sister, Kalani is apart of the New Zealand U17's squad. Natalie's boyfriend, Ezra Taylor plays for the Queensland Reds in the rugby Super 14 competition. Natalie wants to improve on her rebounding this season and one of her career goals is to represent New Zealand at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

 

 

7 MEGAN MICHAEL - GUARD

INTERESTING FACTS: Megan played water polo at state level until the age of 17 where she had to choose a sport- she chose basketball. Megan's mother Alice represented and captained Papua New Guinea in basketball in three South Pacific games.

GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: Megan has been a Queensland Academy of Sport Scholarship holder in 1995 – 1997.She has represented QLD South U-16, U-18 and U-20 at the national junior championships and was selected as a reserve in the Australian U-16 team. Megan has played in the QABL since 1997 with Brisbane Capitals, Gold Coast Gilders and now Logan Thunder.

COACH'S COMMENTS: Megan will be playing just her second season in the WNBL, but people who know Megan know how much she brings to a team. The ultimate team player, Megan can run the one or two positions on any night. Outstanding anticipation, always prepared to put her body on the line, and lightning quick hands will make her one of our defensive specialists.

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Megan has two sisters - Louise and Tanya and one brother - Malcolm. Mal won three AFL premierships with the Brisbane Lions (2001- 2003). Her boyfriend Thalo Green is a former NBL player. Megan has three nicknames, Shmegs, Megs or Megsy. Megan wants to improve her shooting average this season and her career goal is to win a WNBL premiership with Logan Thunder.

 


8 HOLLY SMITH - FORWARD

INTERESTING FACTS: Holly's sister Cassie also plays with the Logan Thunder.
COACH’S COMMENTS: Another keyway worker who can rebound extremely well, who is coming off another successful SEABL campaign. Holly shot the ball at a high percentage from the field, maintaining a consistent game week in week out.
PERSONAL INFORMATION: She was born in Brisbane, Queensland.

 

 

9 CASSIE SMITH - GUARD

OCCUPATION: Support worker and studying bachelor of applied science (human movement) studies

INTERESTING FACTS: Cassie's sister Holly also plays with the Logan Thunder. Cassie suffered a knee reconstruction during her first game of the 2008 SEABL season. Cassie and Thunder team mate, Sarah Graham, have followed each other's path through Queensland state teams for almost their whole basketball career.

GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: Queensland Academy of Sport scholarship holder 2003-2006. Represented QLD South U-16, U-18 and QLD U-20’s at the national junior championships. Cassie captained the Queensland U-20's team at the 2008 national junior championships. Currently plays for Brisbane Districts Spartans in the SEABL. Cassie helped the Spartans to their maiden SEABL championship in 2009..

COACH'S COMMENTS: Tall and rangy guards are hard to come by, and Cassie fits the bill. Can shoot the ball well and put it to the floor through traffic. Excellent defender with great reach which gives the team many match up options. Cassie is very unselfish and has excellent passing skills.

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Cassie is studying bachelor of applied science (human movement) studies and also works for branches lifestyle support as a disability support worker. Cassie wants to improve on her shots off the dribble and one of her career goal is to continue playing in the WNBL.

 

 

10 BIANCIA ABBOTT – FORWARD/CENTRE

GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: Biancia played in English Basketball League for London Heathrow Acers in 2005/06. She was the ABA National Leading Rebounder in 2006, averaging 13.7 per game and in 2004, averaging 10.7 per game. Bianca represented Queensland at National School Championships in 1999 and played for Rockhampton in the QABL between 1998 and 2003.
COACH’S COMMENTS: A tireless worker on the defensive end and a player who is very capable of scoring at will. Biancia is looking to be a consistent presence in and around the key and she brings a lot of toughness to our team. One of those players that will be doing a lot of the hard yards that every team needs.
PERSONAL INFORMATION: Biancia loves the beach, surfing and chilling out with her friends and team mates. Her pet hate is rudeness. She wants to visit the Maldives one day and her most embarrassing moment in basketball was when approximately 15 colleagues from her work came to a local QABL game wearing masks (life size picture of my face) on a stick

 

 

12 ODETTE ANDREW – GUARD/FORWARD

GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: Odette is a Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) scholarship holder. She received the QAS Most Improved Female Player award 2006 and QAS Excellence award 2007. Odette represented QLD South U-16, U-18 and QLD U-20 at the national junior championships and played with Brisbane Capitals in the QABL in 2007. Currently, she plays for Southern Districts Spartans in the SEABL.

COACH'S COMMENTS: Odette is one of our youngest players but a proven performer at national junior championships. She has a strong perimeter game and can take you off the dribble well. Odette is an excellent athlete who will get better with every week of the season.

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Odette has a brother and a sister and is in her final year of school at Brisbane State High School. She hopes to play for the Australian Opals basketball team in the future.

 

 

13 EMILY FRYTERS - CENTRE/FORWARD

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Emily was apart of the Adelaide Lightning's 2007/08 WNBL Championship win. Emily has two oder sisters, Rachel and Rebecca. Rebecca made the under-16 and under-18 South Australian teams. Emily's career highlights was her college conference championship with the University of Houston in 2004 and the WNBL championship with Adelaide Lightning in 2008. She hopes to improve on her offensive presence and win another WNBL championship and a SEABL title.

COACH'S COMMENTS:

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Kate has two sisters, Maddy and Grace. Both sisters have represented Queensland at under-16 and under-18. Kate's career highlight was winning the 2009 SEABL Championship with Brisbane Spartans. This season she wants to improve on her fitness, shooting and ball skills and aspires to winning a WNBL championship.

 

 

20 REBECCA HAYNES - GUARD/FORWARD

 

PERSONAL: DOB 24/10/1984; Height 185cm

OCCUPATION: Student

JUNIOR ASSOCIATION: Southern Districts Spartans (QLD)

INTERESTING FACTS: Rebecca played college basketball in America for four years with Daytona Beach Community College, Community College of Rhode Island and Jacksonville State University. She’s currently studying accounting at Queensland University of Technology.

GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: All Australian 2001 and named student athlete of the year at the Community College of Rhode Island. Named in the All Star Australian team at the national school championships and achieved Queensland Academy of Sport most outstanding graduate 2001. She represented QLD South U-18 at the national junior championships

COACH'S COMMENTS: A proven performer at QBL level, Rebecca provides us another tall guard that can play four positions. Rebecca has a deadly 3-point shot coupled with her length in the key, she could prove to be an awkward match up. Has good shot blocking ability and is a very good rebounder.

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Rebecca has a sister, Nicole, and a brother, David. She loves food especially Italian and Mexican food and her favourite movie is Love and Basketball. She enjoys going out with friends and dancing all night, but can’t stand people who quit.

 

 

21 SARAH GRAHAM - GUARD

INTERESTING FACTS: Sarah's Thunder team mate, Cassie Smith, have followed each other's path through Queensland state teams for almost their whole basketball careers.
GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: Selected in the Australian Schoolgirls Team in 2005, 2006 and 2007 Won gold at the Australian Schools Championships in 2006 & 2007. 2007 (captain) named tournament `MVP'.Sarah represented Queensland South at the Australian Championships in U/16 2004 & U/18 2006 winning silver. She was selected in the Queensland U/20 2007 team that took out the silver. Sarah was selected in Queensland U/20 team for 2008 Championships.
COACH’S COMMENTS: One of our best performers last season, Sarah’s Rookie of the Year award was well deserved and I believe she can only get better. Mostly used as a shooting guard, Sarah has the ability to also run the point guard position. Having coached Sarah for several years through her junior career she has steeped up many times in the past to nail the big shot or make the big play.
PERSONAL INFORMATION: Sarah was named the 2008/09 WNBL Rookie of the Year. Sarah won bronze at the 2009 World University Games in Serbia 09. Sarah hopes to win as many WNBL championships with Logan as possible and aspires to one day play for Australia. Sarah was raised in Logan and went to local school, John Paul College where she was mentored by Thunder coach, Richard Orlick as her basketball coach. She has an older brother Tim.

 

 

32 KRISTEN VEAL – GUARD

INTERESTING FACTS: Kristen gets an annual knee surgery.

WNBL CAREER NOTES: Kristen, a former WNBA player with the Phoenix Mercury.
In the 2003/04 season, she was named a WNBL Ambassador and was a member of the WNBL All-Star Five. She has led the WNBL in assists in the following years: 1998, 1998/99, 1999/00 and 2002/03. Originally an AIS player, Kristen averaged 8.6 points and 3.6 assists for the 2006/07 season. In the 2002/03 season, she averaged a career-high 5.4 assists per game (114 all up). Throughout her WNBL career she has amassed a total of 763 assists

GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: Kristen selected 13th pick in the 2001 WNBA draft by Phoenix and played with the Mercury in 2001/02 - at the same time becoming the youngest player to play in the league. She represented SA U16, U18 and U-20 at the National Junior Championships. In 1997 she attended the junior camp. She currently plays for North West Tasmania Thunder in the SEABL Competition. In 2005 she played in NWBL with the Dallas Fury. In 1996 she won a silver medal Junior World Championships.

COACH’S COMMENTS: We will once again look for Kristen to lead BDS Logan Thunder. She has the ability to light up the scoreboard but she also brings a brilliant passing game and is very unselfish. Her role in the team for our young inexperienced line-up in our inaugural season was invaluable. Kristen has the ability of making her team-mates play better and with the club recruiting some extra strike weapons in the off-season, expect Kristen’s excellent passing game to give opposition teams a headache this season.

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Kristen has one sister. She enjoys the water in any shape or form, surf, body boarding, pools, wake boarding and jet skiing. She hopes to win at least one more championship, preferably 5 and coach a WNBL team to 5 more. Kristen will be aiming to improve her shot percentage this season.
